Acoustic Wave

What is Acoustic Wave Therapy?

Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) offers a novel method for treating cellulite by employing pressure waves to target its two primary underlying causes: fibrous septae and the bulging of fat into the lower layers of the skin. AWT generates a pressure wave that traverses through both skin and fatty tissue, impacting fibrous septae directly. This results in collagen disruption and skin release, leading to a smoother skin surface.

How does Acoustic Wave Therapy reduce cellulite?

Cellulite manifests as alterations in skin texture, often described as resembling an "orange peel" or a "mattress." It predominantly affects women, with 85-98% experiencing some degree of cellulite according to various studies (See our Cellulite Treatment page and our blog post titled "What Causes Cellulite").

The distribution and organization of fat differ between men and women due to variations in connective tissue fibers. In men, these fibers are largely parallel to the skin, resulting in less downward pulling of the skin by fat deposits and, consequently, smoother skin. In contrast, women's connective tissue fibers are oriented perpendicularly to the skin, causing the skin to be pulled downward, leading to an uneven surface.

AWT aims to counter this by utilizing pressure waves to disintegrate the collagen fibers responsible for pulling down the skin. This allows the tension in these bands to relax, thereby creating a smoother skin surface. Additionally, the therapy stimulates new collagen production, which helps mitigate the protrusion of fat beneath the skin.

Recommended Treatment Plan

An initial course of 4-6 treatments is typically advised, with each session lasting between 30 to 45 minutes, contingent on the area being addressed. Due to the recurring nature of cellulite in many patients, it is often suggested to undergo 1-2 maintenance treatments annually.

By understanding the mechanisms behind Acoustic Wave Therapy, individuals can make informed decisions about whether this treatment is suitable for their specific needs in combating cellulite.
